Notes on progress in the months Nov.-Dec.15th

As I took out my first ice boat out of the mold and started to clean off the ruff edges a large wall of the boat fell off.
As I looked at the boat put it into a shallow container and began to form a new wall. The next day wall was redone and ready for testing this following week.
Since I was waiting for a while for this mold and ice modal to be complete I had to think what would do if this happen in Berlin... so I decided to sculpt a boat free hand. you can see the photos for more detail. The larger boat I created free hand and the smaller and more in proportion boat which broke and fixed again.

As you can see in the following pictures the small modal figure. This figure is approximately 120:1 scale which was constructed to fit into the boat formed in the mold. The paddle the figure is holding is one of a series scale 120:1 modals. from this I took a glass scale modal a few glassblowing studios but no one had the space for equipment to produce a life size glass paddle. As I went to pick up some glass at the Bern Gallery in Burlington Vermont the head glassblower and I talked and they said they can produce it. So the following few weeks I am working out how exactly the glass paddle has to look like and if I may have to produce two paddles just incase one brakes some how.

I have been thinking about how I will create this ice boat in Sweden. I was brain storming about doing a performance with the ice boat too. I was thinking in this performance little would happen. Mainly create a small film of the performance I am not sure how it will be seen in reality but I can image it in a short clip or trail. I will begin the performance by entering the boat with my glass paddle and dressed in a classy white suit jacket hoodie hybrid (see more detail in model drawings and photographs). By doing this performance in Hällefors Sweden I will be able to explore how a sculpted ice boat speaks differently based upon the remote snowy and icy location in relation to a hot urban setting. As I sit in the frozen boat with my glass paddle in my hands on the vast frozen lake I wait until the boat disappears in the mist. I am not sure yet but I want to see how it would be positioning camera where we will make it look like the ice boat will be floating away in the snowy mist.
Note: last time I was on the lake in Hallefors there was in the evening and sometimes during the day when a snow storm mist blows across the lake If I position the boat in the middle of the lake or in the path of the wind this could be an amazing shot.

There are some other thoughts I would like to discuss with you Jean marie though I will bring it up in our next meeting, talk to you then.

1. Art curatorial project:
Working title: untitled a.k.a Ice boat
Detailed description (300+ words) of your art project including goals and expected output. Be specific as to media, size, quantities:
“Untitled, aka ice boat” is an ice sculptural journey between artist, his work and his process. This piece explores the reflexive working process of Quint Welters in the shifting environment of the Berlin Canal.
On the second week of July 2011 I will take a journey in a hand sculpted ice boat that will begin at the Böcklerpark canal (Berlin Germany). From there I will boat in the direction of Prinzenstraße bridge until the boat vanishes away back to its origin.
The time length of the journey is unknown the final film which will be put together of the journey will be 10 minutes or less.
The belongings that I have decided to bring on the journey will be a glass paddle for navigation and what I will be wearing will be: black shoes, black pants, white long sleeve shirt, and a woven summer hat.
I intend to sculpt a row boat from ice using the same water from the canal which I plan to boat over. This ice boat will have the structure of a wooden boat. (As seen in this photo)

I will create a mold where I will freeze layer after layer of filtered, boiled, and normal canal water to illustrate and enhance the character of the ice boat. By purifying the water the ice will form in layers of transparent, milky and blue coloration that will help imitate the structure of a wood boat. (as seen in the following picture)

I will create a glass paddle to help propel the boat through the canal as well reflect my personal glassblowing practice into the piece. This glass paddle will be about 2 meters long and about 30-50 cm wide.
The size of the boat will be as big as necessary to complete the goal of the project (able to carry 1-2 individuals across a body of water) with out sinking. Over the course of preparing this project I will use the material that I gathered in my research to support execute this piece.

I will create a project blog in which I will post the creation, documentation, background information and everything that is about the “Ice boat” project. I will as well send a publication to the media (such as newspapers and televised broadcasters) informing the public about this project.

For this project I will assemble a crew that can assist me in the execution and documentation of this project.

Working title: Reflexive Art in the Environment
Formulate the working hypothesis or topic of inquiry in one or two sentence:

I am interested very much about the process of transformation in the environment, how one object can be transformed into another and be able to reflect upon.

Detailed description (300+ words) of your research project:
a) Hypothesis

It is by working reflexively in the environment one can discover the process of transformation and bring to surface discussion between objects, people and environment and realize the hidden potential which the environment embraces.

b) Research Question

What is the process of artists working reflexively with the environment? What kind of issues arises when working with the environment and with historically, politically charged environments? Are their specific challenges or benefits when working with the environment?

c) Methodology

In this research I will explore first “Shed boat shed” (Mobil Architecture No 2) 2005 created Simon Starling. Second I will explore Bas Jan Ader’s work “In Search of the Miraculous”. Third I will explore “The Paradox of Praxis” by Francis Alys. Fourth I will explore Andy Goldsworthy “Midsummer Snowballs”, June 2000.

Through out the year I will create a weekly log of my reflections, comments, thoughts, critiques etc, between my practice and the art works I will read and explore about.

As the year progresses I expect my perspective to my relationship I have now with other art works. My goal of this research (to look at other art works which relate to my practice and final studio project) is to extend my research perspective and merge it with my studio practice. In this research I expect to relate my own progress and practice in relation to the works I will explore.

Descriptions of studio projects

“Interaction” aka (Ice hand)

This Happening is a interaction I will create between a ice hand and a or multiple participants. The climax arises when the participant can't connect no longer or the ice hand melts away.
Every interaction between ice and humans is unique what the out come happens to be depends on the participants.

“Charged Reflection” aka (Frozen TV)

This concept consists up of a television which showing nothing but unfocused grey buzzing screen that is incased in a thick ice block.
This work reflects the continuation of the MTV Generation which is still active in todays society. I like to reflect that the television incased in ice symbolizes that the television still prevails even in extreme times.

“Bailout” aka (Frozen pennies)

This Sculpture consists of 10,000 pennies (hundred dollars worth of pennies) and incased in ice. This ice sculpture is based on the idea of the 21 first century economic bailout plan. What is happening to our currency? Where does the money go? How does this effect?
The pennies symbolizes the economy, the ice symbolizes the people in control of the money and the location symbolizes the destiny of the money.

I still have to figure out more details of where “Bailout” should be placed.

Jan. 3rd Begin freezing in ice

Began putting layers of ice, but interrupted after a week progress freezing conditions switched to warmer temperature stopped suitable conditions.
Weather warming up freezing conditions not suitable for incasing TV. Moving to plan B working with electric freezers.
Plan B: freezing ready made ice blocks. I then will take the blocks of ice then pile them around the Television and freeze all into one piece.

Jan. 12th began freezing with freezers

Jan. 30th Putting ice blocks around television then filming television thats contained by ice.

Jan. 3nd final Deadline
"Interaction" (Two hands connecting with each other one is made from ice the other is a human hand. This work is a happening documented by video):

After my talk with Nicolas the film was not suitable for presentation though the sound recording was successful in my opinion (I am figuring out how I can post the sound clip). My plan is to remake the film on the 24th.

The original sound recording from the first filming I felt has something but I feel I need a second opinion, though it is a bit long after about 13 minutes I feel it becomes more interesting.

I still feel it is useful to remake the film and get better visuals.
I will remake the film with the concept of taking a block of ice and interacting with my hand possibly work with two angles.

March 25th final Deadline

Studio Project Plan (First Year TI)

TI Studio Project

Working title:
Momentary Influence

My studio project is based on the idea of moments of influence. Other words: a moment of transformation. This idea was formed out of my fascination of how humans and the environment influence each other. I like to acknowledge how these two forces (humans and nature) are connected and influence one another.

I will create a series of artworks using primarily glass and ice, and occasionally ready made objects. I will document these artwork by film, sound recording, writing, photography, and possibly interviews.
My final artworks will be the live events, with exceptions to performances that can only be show on film. Since I must present my work later on I will have the documentation. 

I feel when a ephemeral artwork takes place it is all about time when it reaches its climax of beauty and then disappears that is “Momentary influence”. I like to explore how beauty can transform one persons way of see, just with in a instant we change significantly or with minor change, but we do change for that matter.
The climax of change, the turning point is what my series is going to be based on.

What I want to discover and show in this series is my fascination and curiosity with ephemeral objects. I want to look into the characteristics of glass and ice and the transformation they go through. I want to demonstrate the use of glass and ice as more then just a medium. I want to display the character in which the materials are in and look at how it can impact its direct environment, and vice-versa.

The reason I have chosen glass and ice as my primary mediums is their natural similarities, differences and qualities.
The natural ability glass and ice can be found in nature or popularity in every day life. I find interesting they are also both ephemeral materials. They both have specific conditions they must be in if they want to stay in the same form: ice must be in curtain temperature and glass must me conditioned to handle the forces of gravity (gravity will transform the glass figure).Their are many varieties of glass and ice they are found or created in. I like their unique ability to be manipulated or recycled easily and their sensitive to temperature. Glass and ice are also quite different but can often trick the eye. This deception I feel is its one of their differences. If only experiencing ice by documentation the element of feeling disappears. The feeling of its cold temperature or the ability to indicate if the ice is dry and hazardous to human touch.
My interest with glass and ice is also to challenge myself to take these materials and use them out of their normal context of everyday life. I want to bring it into the art space or into an “open space” which offers the interaction and dialog amongst artist, colleges and spectators.

The various pieces of works will consist of constructing and destructing landscapes, embracing objects, or interact with the forces it is confronted with, such as human influence, natural elements (heat, wind, rain, sun, etc).
I will use molds; such as latex gloves, rubber balloons, plastic bags and other forms I find. These molds I will then fill with liquid, coloring or leave clear which afterwards would freeze into the established form that suits the work. 

For the works that involve glass pieces I will use readymade glass or keep the glass objects clear and simple. I want to put the accent on the concept not on the craftsmanship though I still will use the craft of glassblowing if it is necessary for the work.

I like to ask my self these questions during my process:

How does glass and ice interact with there environment?
Can the concept I have used be expressed better other then using glass and ice? And why?
How does glass and ice support the concept used in the artwork?
How did the final artwork influence me as the creator?
At this juncture my goal is to have this method of creating bring me closer to finding and applying new ways to my practice. I will study the actions and reactions that occur in the environment of my work.
I want to bring more uncertainty and sensitivity into my art and establish a closer relationship to my process.

Research Project Plan (First Year TI)

Is it a Craft or is it an Art or is it both?

In my past experience I have been confused thinking about my glassblowing craft and the conceptual art I have created. I feel they are different, but come from one place. I look at glass purely technically, but my art work comes from another place. I want to bring up and discuss these two perspectives and see if there are other creative people who have a similar problem and come up with some kind of a conclusion to clarify what is going on with these two creative practices.

I want to show that there is a distinction between art and craft. I want to talk about the area where art and craft meet, which confuses and distorts the understanding within and outside the creative community.

Why were the fields of 'arts' and 'crafts' separated, and can this be sustained in a contemporary setting?

The paper discusses specifically this issue in the context of glass art and glass craft practices.

Since I am not much of a writer I will create a video. This video will show the interviews and conversations I will have with various individuals in the creative community and address my research question. From this video I will create an edited transcript which I will submit as my research paper along with the video itself.

In the execution of this research paper I will follow this basic outline;

-Make a detailed video story board, based on the research paper guidelines
-Write up interview questions and conversation topics
-Find suitable individuals to interview
-Gather up sound and video recordings
-Have interviews and conversations with individuals
-Edit video and sound material
